Pathologies of a Different Kind: Dysfunctional Interactions between International Organizations

چکیده

Abstract This article develops the concept of “interorganizational pathologies” as an extension Michael N. Barnett and Martha Finnemore's work on bureaucratic pathologies. Adopting open system perspective, I argue that dysfunctional interactions may arise between international organizations (IOs) even when their cooperation is fairly institutionalized. To advance this line reasoning, examine International Monetary Fund (IMF or Fund) World Bank (or Bank). Evidence from more than ninety stakeholder interviews indicates have been marked by what Finnemore call “insulation.” In particular, two opposing types interorganizational insulation common in context Fund–Bank relations: (1) groupthink, sustained intellectual decoupling IOs outside world; (2) silence, (temporary) communicative disruption them. finding partly puzzling because while we expect IMF–World to produce groupthink given organizations’ highly similar worldviews, would them prevent silence established protocols for continuous cross-organizational information sharing. The analysis sheds fresh light promises pitfalls cogovernance key players regime complexes transnational networks.

The Politics , Power , and Pathologies of International Organizations

Do international organizations really do what their creators intend them to do? In the past century the number of international organizations (1Os) has increased exponentially, and we have a variety of vigorous theories to explain why they have been created. Most of these theories explain IO creation as a response to problems of incomplete information, transaction costs, and other barriers to P...

A different kind of association between socio-histories and health.

In the last 15 years, genetics researchers have developed new molecular genomic technologies for analysing human differences at the level of DNA. This was soon followed by an explosion of studies that aimed to find genetic explanations for the differential health outcomes between individuals and groups by examining association between DNA and disease. Meanwhile, other geneticists have used the ...

A Different Kind of Country

This is the second of three volumes dealing with the comparative morphogenesis and morphology of the cerebellum in the various classes of vertebrates. Larsell divides the mammalian cerebellum into 10 basic lobules. Their variations are described for practically all of the orders of mammals. The details of cerebellar homology are often augmented by concise descriptions of variations in motor and...

Supersymmetry of a different kind

A local supersymmetric action for a (2+1)-dimensional system including gravity, the electromagnetic field and a Dirac spin-1/2 field is presented. The action is a Chern-Simons form for a connection of the OSp(2|2) group. All the fields enter as parts of the connection, that transforms in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The system is off-shell invariant under local (gauge) supersy...

A different kind of quarterback

I am not big on celebrations, nor do I accept many invitations to receive awards. There is much work to be done, and the reward is in the doing. I learned this lesson early from my parents, Martha and Robert Guyden. However, I am humbled that anyone would even mention my name in association with E. E. Just. I, like he, was born into a segregated America, and somehow we both found biology. I thi...
